Why Partnering, not Parenting?

When your child has a mental health issue, it changes everything - how we live, how we love and how we see the past, present and future. From the dynamics of communication and possibility to expectations and beliefs to our own ability to think straight, we can become consumed by trying to help our child to wellness.

In our haste to help and with a focus on fixing - because that's what us parents do, isn't it? - we can find our homes become a battlefield and our heads are quickly filled with all the what ifs, conflicting information and overpowering feelings like guilt, shame and fear. Our behaviours, while done to try and help, can often lead to a greater sense of disconnection and we can wonder if we'll ever recognise our child - or our family -again.

'Partnering not Parenting' is an approach for parents of young people with mental health issues that helps reframe the challenges and offers pragmatic, compassionate and practical tools to help us understand how to reconnect, communicate and build trust at a deeply challenging time.

The 3 stage approach:
Step Down from our Emotions, Experience, Authority and Judgement
Stand Beside our child as we navigate the new normal together to build emotional safety, and
Travel Together to different and often unexpected places and understanding

The course helps deal with the grief, shame and distress we experience having a child with depression, anxiety or other mental health condition while helping them to a place where they feel emotionally safe, seen and heard by us.

But this is most certainly not about perfect parenting! That doesn't exist. This is about using the challenge you face as an opportunity to reflect, to set down some old behaviours and beliefs, and to move forward with greater clarity, connection and hope, and to transform your relationship with yourself, your child and your family.

Suzanne Alderson devised the approach to support her daughter, Issy, to resilient recovery from chronic depression, anxiety, self harm and suicide attempts. It has been used by hundreds of parents to change their relationships with their child.

And this isn't about changing your child ; it's not a therapy or quick fix. It's a powerful, compassionate approach to understanding more about what your whole family is going through as well as the challenges and opportunities this adversity brings. It gives you the community and the tools to begin to calm, connect and converse with your child.

The next course begins on October 23rd and runs for 8 weeks. You access the audio and video resources week by week online and via the Thinkific app on your phone or tablet, and complete them in your own time, with a workbook to help you reflect on your thoughts and document the changes - and challenges - as they happen.

Suzanne also runs regular Live Q&A sessions in the course as well as being present to answer questions and support you in the closed Facebook group that is a key element of this course. The community of other parents who get what you're going through and are there to help support you will give you hope, understanding and strength.

The course cost is £150 for 12 months' access and we have 3 x £50 or 6 x £25 payment plans available too. Having 12 months' access means you can go through the coached course up to 5 times in 2023/24, giving you space if you're concerned about your capacity or just want to continue to reflect, learn and grow. Any time the resources are updated in the 12 months, you'll get free access to them as well.

What parents say about the Partnering not Parenting Course

“I can't recommend this course enough. It is mind blowing. It is informative, in depth, interactive, it makes you think and reflect but the most important thing is IT WORKS. I wanted, needed to change as I love my son and I yearned for connection. I actively participated and listened to the course content and began partnering my son. This course has helped me find and build CONNECTION again. I can't praise it enough. ”

Elaine, Course Participant 2021

“I love Partnering! Thank you for giving me the tools and the confidence to partner my kids. J had an unbelievably positive first couple of days of 6th form but became hugely overwhelmed and had a big wobble on Tuesday night. She was able to communicate effectively with me the extent of her anxiety and we talked it all through. After a day at home to reset yesterday and some adaptations, she’s back in today! ”

A, Course Participant 2021

“Suzanne Alderson 's Partnering not Parenting approach really does work. Not just with kids but husbands too!!! Since reading Never Let Go and putting Partnering into practice our life is so different. My husband is taking initiative and getting involved in supporting our child's MH recovery. #gratefulgratefulGRATEFUL”

G, PMH member

“The partnering course has been so enlightening - it starts and ends with you ….. I didn’t expect that but it has helped me so much. even though my daughter is recovering it is so very useful & a life long skill as it applies to lots of our relationships. I would highly recommend it.”

Joanne, Course Participant 2019

“Yesterday evening he asked if I'd like to eat together. I played it calm and simply said, yes sure. He suggested we watch a show while we ate and I went along with it. Tonight he came down again to eat with me, and watch another episode ~ He's not been prepared to eat with me for years. All thanks to Partnering.”

D, Course Participant 2021

“Having read Suzanne’s book, 'Never Let Go: How To Parent Your Child Through Mental Illness', and embraced the Parenting Mental Health Facebook group, I joined the course thinking it would be an extension of the book. How wrong I was, it is SO much more than that!!! You think you are joining with it being about your child as the focus, but it is a course that looks at you predominantly. You can choose to dig as deep as you wish, and go at your own pace, share with others in the group or not – there’s no pressure. ”

A H, Course Participant

“The Partnering not Parenting course is worth so much more than the money you pay to do it. The resources are so well thought out, extensive and just full of empowering knowledge, education, and insight. There is constant support within the group and Suzanne is always at hand too, and so approachable. I think this course would be valuable for anyone, even those without a child with a mental illness. Fantastic course and couldn’t recommend it more highly. The course has not only helped me in my parenting role but even more as a person, for which I am eternally grateful. ”

Meet Suzanne...

Suzanne Alderson

Suzanne believes in the powerful role parents can play in positively impacting on their family’s mental health when they are properly supported and has committed the past decade to teaching, mentoring and championing parents like her around the world. Her experiences with her 14 year old daughter led her to create the Partnering Not Parenting approach and set up Parenting Mental Health, a community that supports parents of young people with poor mental health. Suzanne started the community in 2016 because she couldn’t find the information, support or connection she was desperate for when her daughter became depressed, anxious, self harmed and attempted suicide after extreme bullying.

Suzanne’s bestselling book 'Never Let Go - How to Parent Your Child Through Mental Illness' was published by Penguin RandomHouse in 2020 and shares her experience and shares some of the PNP approach she devised to support her daughter to recovery. The book has helped thousands of parents to make sense of the extraordinary experience with the 3 step Partnering Not Parenting approach, because parenting a child with a mental health issue is very different to parenting a child. She also runs the ‘Partnering not Parenting’ course, amongst others, and mentors parents 1-1 on how to cope when your child has a mental health issue.

Suzanne believes passionately in the power of community to build meaningful connection and change outcomes in health and wellbeing and was recognised by Facebook in 2018 as one of its 100 most meaningful global community leaders.

She is also a regular speaker and media contributor on how to parent through poor mental health as well as adolescent mental health and its impacts on families, is a Zinc VC Mental Health Fellow and was named Digital Mother of the Year.

Suzanne’s daughter, Issy, who illustrated the Never Let Go book, has since graduated university after being out of school for 2 years with poor mental health.
